Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said Egypt supported the Skhirat agreement on Libya and its signing in the Moroccan city on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists, he said the first step toward fighting terrorism in Libya was approving the tripartite agreement and forming a Government of National Accord. This would open the way to support for the new government, arms supplies, and lifting the relevant embargo, while recognizing the government as the Libyan people’s legitimate representative.
He acknowledged challenges: some parties remained outside the agreement, and the new government would have to fulfill its duties and demonstrate to the public that it could bear responsibility.
He said the agreement and government formation were essential to enabling Libyans and the international community to resist terrorism.
Recent terrorist attacks in the region and worldwide had sounded an alarm for major powers, convincing everyone that terrorism’s spread in Libya could not be ignored. Countries were taking action, and Egypt was following developments and being consulted.
Asked about military intervention, he said no current proposal had been settled and the matter required careful regional and international study. No new stage could be contemplated before the parties signed an agreement.
