
The Group of Seven major economies expressed concern about risks to the global economy and pledged to pursue strong, sustainable growth.
In a statement at the end of its summit in Japan, the group’s leaders also promised to avoid “competitive devaluations” of their currencies while warning against disorderly exchange-rate movements.
This represented a compromise between Japan, which had threatened to intervene to halt sharp rises in the yen, and the United States, which generally opposes market intervention.
“Global growth remains moderate and below potential, while risks of weak growth persist,” the G7 said. It added: “Global growth is our urgent priority.”
