Jordan is expected to come increasingly under the influence of a very cold polar air mass on Friday, behind the low-pressure system beginning to affect the country on Thursday.
ArabiaWeather forecasts a further substantial temperature drop, leaving readings around 6–7°C below their usual seasonal averages.
Conditions will be notably cold, especially in the mountains, with strong winds, cloud, and heavy rain in northern and central Jordan and the southern mountains, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and hail. Scattered showers are expected in desert areas, God willing.
Snow is expected to begin and accumulate early in the morning in the high mountains of Ajloun and Jerash above 1,200 meters. By midday, accumulating snow will extend to other mountains above 1,000 meters, including Amman’s higher neighborhoods.
During the afternoon and evening, the snow level is expected to fall to elevations above 900 meters. Precipitation will become intermittent in most areas, with some snow and rain mixed with snow possibly reaching places above 800 meters.
Strong westerly winds will reach 80 km/h, with occasional gusts exceeding 90 km/h, raising dust and sandstorms in desert areas.
At night, all areas will remain windy and markedly cold, with severe cold in the mountains.
Scattered rain and hail showers will affect many areas, while intermittent snow showers continue in mountains above 900 meters.
Westerly winds will remain brisk to strong, at times reaching 80 km/h with gusts approaching 90 km/h.
The website issued the following warnings for Friday:
- Flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, and intermittent rises in tunnel water levels across the country, including the Jordan Valley.
- Snow accumulation above 1,000 meters, including elevated neighborhoods of Amman.
- Poor or potentially zero visibility on mountain roads because of fog, low cloud, and periods of heavy rain and snow.
- Poor or potentially zero visibility on desert roads because of dust and sandstorms.
- Severe thunderstorms and possible lightning strikes.
- Winds exceeding 80 km/h, with gusts above 90 km/h.
