Oil Prices Rise on Strong Demand

Crude oil prices rose today, supported by strong demand, after falling in early trading on expectations that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, would not cut production at its meeting this week.

OPEC, which accounts for more than 40 percent of global crude production, is scheduled to meet in Vienna on Friday. US bank Citi said the organization was likely to maintain its current output.

Energy Aspects said OPEC would meet on Friday with little inclination to reduce production.

Prices gained support when Saudi Oil Minister Ali Al-Naimi said demand would rise in the second half of the year.

JPMorgan said strong refinery demand was also supporting prices.

Front-month Brent crude fell to $64.71 a barrel before recovering to $65 by 06:35 GMT.

US crude rose 15 cents to $60.35 a barrel.
