Rwanda’s President Thanks Voters after Term-Extension Referendum

Rwandan President Paul Kagame thanked the country after the previous week’s referendum approved constitutional amendments allowing him to remain in office beyond 2017. He did not say whether he would seek reelection.

The Friday referendum, in which 98 percent voted yes, drew criticism from Western powers concerned about the growing number of African leaders seeking to extend their time in office.
