A US official said on Sunday that the United States had delivered another shipment of ammunition to Syrian Arab Coalition fighters combating Islamic State in northern Syria, amid concerns that ammunition could reach groups Washington did not intend to support.
The official told Reuters that the latest supply operation was completed on Saturday with an overland delivery.
It was not immediately clear who transported the ammunition into Syria, but the official said US forces did not take it across. Further operational details were not yet available.
This was the second time the United States had armed the Syrian Arab Coalition, comprising between ten and twelve armed groups and around 5,000 fighters.
The first shipment was delivered by airdrop on October 11, raising questions about how Washington could ensure ammunition reached the intended groups despite Pentagon assurances. The official said the United States was confident the latest shipment reached its intended recipients.
The coalition works with Kurdish and other forces to recapture territory held by Islamic State. Turkey, however, is concerned about further advances by the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units while it is in conflict with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
