Syrian authorities released two National Coordination Committee members late in the day after detaining them for hours while they were traveling to Riyadh for a meeting of the High Negotiations Committee. Ahmad Al-Asrawi and Mounir Al-Bitar had been stopped on Wednesday morning at the Syrian-Lebanese border and taken to an unknown location.
The National Coordination Committee had announced earlier that government forces detained the two executive-office members at the border on their way to the Riyadh meeting.
It demanded their immediate release and held the authorities responsible for their safety.
The committee condemned the action as arbitrary and said it contradicted UN Resolution 2254 and international efforts to achieve a negotiated political settlement.
